Ron Harvey has learned a few things about compliance during his 30+ years in the hazardous waste business, and he has seen the best and the worst compliance situations. Often in his career, Ron has seen businesses where the people responsible for managing corporate environmental or safety programs have 2 or 3 other hats to wear, and the EHS hat never seems to end up on top. This results in neglected programs that are required by law for worker safety and environmental protection.

Ron is on a mission to solve this common problem by bringing regulatory compliance within reach of the average business owner or manager who doesn’t have dedicated staff to build the safety or environmental programs from the ground up, or even to handle the routine requirements. He begins the process by evaluating the compliance needs for a facility, determining the employee training requirements, and formulating the mandatory written plans. His goal is to break down the walls of uncertainty that prevent you from developing a culture of compliance that will provide significant positive benefits for your company.

Experience

Ron is the author of “The Failure of Compliance,” a call to the EHS World to change their attitude about the regulations and to embrace the intent of the rules by moving beyond strict obedience to the letter of the law.

During the course of his career, Ron has:

• Worked at four hazardous waste facilities in supervisory positions;
• Personally handled over 400,000 drums of waste and cleaned up hundreds of illegal drug labs;
• Supervised the clean-up crews at hazardous material spills for over 20 years;
• Established a one-of-a-kind facility in New Mexico for the cost-effective management of hazardous waste from very small waste generators.

Employee Education

Ron Harvey views employee training as one of the best investments a company can make. But he hates the word ‘training’ – “you train animals, not people.” With detailed instruction that engages the students, he endows employees with understanding that will help them make the simple choice: “Am I going to do this job safely or am I going to do it the old-fashioned way and hope for the best?”

EPA, DOT and OSHA rules are complex and confusing, but they apply to tens of thousands of organizations in every sector of the economy, from the Fortune 500 to the local county government. After providing environmental services to thousands of businesses, Ron estimates that – at best – 50% are in significant compliance. The rest are doing what he calls “seat of the pants compliance” . . . just doing the bare minimum to get by because they have no guidance. “Those are the ones I like helping the most. They want to do the right thing, but they just don’t know where to start.”
